Imagine running your own radio station, without having to worry about all the technical details, engineers, towers, and such. Well, Podcasting may allow you to do just this and more. Podcasting is quickly becoming an Internet buzzword and the latest technology craze as it literally gains thousands of users and “podcasters” each day.  This session will introduce you to Podcasting, take you through the steps of finding and listening to podcasts, as well as show you how to use the Macintosh OS as a tool to create, manage, and share your own Podcast. Although Podcasting was named after the iPod, you do not need to have an iPod to Podcast or listen to Podcasts.

A discussion about effective methods for providing technical support. Some specific methods for troubleshooting will be covered as well as ideas about how to organize your help desk so that it can provide just-in-time support as well as be proactive and reduce trouble-calls in the future.Tech specifications or needs: a desire to provide service to your "clients".

Barrows 133    Using the Maine Memory Network to Bring Local History to Life   Steve Bromage, Maine Historical Society
During this session you will participate in a hands-on demonstration of the Maine Memory Network and discuss local history projects made possible and supported by it. The Maine Memory Network (www.mainememory.net) is a statewide digital museum, developed by the Maine Historical Society, that enables historical societies, museums, and libraries throughout Maine to share their collections through one centralized, Web accessible database. The site provides teachers, students, and the general public with unprecedented access to a constantly growing digital archive of primary source documents (currently almost 10,000) of local, state, and national significance contributed by 160 organizations from every corner of Maine.

DP Corbett 109    Introduction to Max/MSP/Jitter: A Graphical Programming Environment for Real-Time Interaction

Max/MSP/Jitter is a graphical environment for music, audio, and multimedia. In use worldwide for over fifteen years by performers, composers, artists, teachers, and students, Max/MSP is the way to make your computer do things that reflect your individual ideas and dreams.Max is the kern of that environment Msp is enables you to do very dynamic Audio Processing Jitter is useful to anyone interested in real-time video processing, custom effects, 2D/3D graphics, audio/visual interaction, data visualization, and analysis.
This workshop will introduce you to this environment, how to use it, and explore some of the huge variety of applications that can be created with Max/msp/jitter.    Session limit is 10 on a “first come, first served” basis.

DP Corbett 113    Creating Fun and Easy Digital Video with Apple iMovie   Sheridan Kelley, University of Maine
While iMovie is a model of simplicity, its speed and high quality make it an ideal candidate for putting together video material in a very fast and painless manner. This introductory class will provide the foundation for more advanced applications in digital video.  During the course of this workshop students will learn the essential basics of downloading video images from a digital camcorder to the iMovie program. Next, the students will learn how to edit the footage for content, add titles, an audio clip, and export it to Quick Time.

Jenness 102    Maine's History Comes Alive with Technology Chris Frank and Chris Corey, Intelligent Spatial Technologies
The iPointer™ System delivers on demand up-to-date Information about user-selected landmarks and geospatial objects. While most location-enabled technologies answer the question “Where am I?” the iPointer™ System also answers the question “What's that over there?” The iPointer™ System provides information about user-selected objects by applying the pointing selection method. For example, a traveler can point the iPointer™ client device at an old church and learn when it was built and who was the architect. In this session you will learn how the iPointer works and how it can be included into history lessons of Maine.

Jenness 106    Digital Photo Portraiture, Fast and Easy        Bill Kuykendall, New Media Program, UMaine
A hands-on workshop in digital portraiture.  Participants will learn to make dramatic professional-quality portraits using digital cameras and natural studio lighting found in commonplace settings.  Everyone who participates will photograph another person and be photographed using cameras provided by the workshop.

Databases are great for organizing research information and schoolwork, but did you know that it could be used for keeping track of your CDs, friend’s addresses, and sport statistics?  Learn to put pictures and graphics with your information and to utilize this powerful tool for all your needs

Barrows 133    Bringing Maine History to Life   
Steve Bromage, Maine Historical Society and Philip W. Sugg Middle School in Lisbon Falls
Join teacher Richard Moore and students from Philip W. Sugg Middle School in Lisbon Falls to learn about their foray into local history.  This year, the Sugg students worked closely with members of the Lisbon Falls  Historical Society and staff from the Maine Historical Society to  explore the history of their community, and to share that history on the Maine Memory Network.  The students did research, learned to handle and catalog historic documents, and then scanned and uploaded them to the Maine Memory Network where the documents are accessible to people across Maine.  Learn about and see their project!

As part of TIC's research project into the ergonomics of laptop computing for MLTI students, this workshop provides practical recommendations for student behaviors, strategies for creating a healthy interaction with
computers and innovative furniture solutions for the 21st century classroom. Learn more about current ergonomic research and how work style, ergonomics, somatic awareness, stress management, regeneration, vision care and fitness play a role in healthy laptop computing.

iPhoto is more than digital pictures. Students and teachers alike can use the iPhoto software to breath like into presentations, poetry, stories, and books. During this session you will learn: how to import pictures and the file types that work with iPhoto, how to organize your images into libraries, how to make a slideshow, how to turn your images into a QuickTime movie, and how to export them for use in another application, like AppleWorks. A question and answer session will be included. If you have already done some neat stuff with iPhoto bring it to show the Apple trainer! We love to see what our students have created.

This new program that is in development is a health and nutrition program that ties a dockable pedometer / heart rate watch to an online video game.  We’ve partnered with Penbay Medical Hospital and the Penobscot YMCA on development and are participating in research and design.  Are there middle school kids out there who would like to learn more and maybe participate on an advisory group?  Come and see what this is all about and maybe even get more involved!
